The rich history of Pemba Island

Pemba Island - pronounced ‘PEMBA' is located off the East African coast, within the Zanzibar Archipelago. The first evidence of settlement dates back to the early Swahili civilizations. For centuries, Pemba was largely populated by farming and fishing communities, shaped by the influence of Arab traders, Portuguese explorers, Omani rulers and the respected local heritage, whose traditions have significantly influenced the island’s culture. Pemba’s destiny changed when the spice trade rapidly expanded during the 18th century, transforming its economy from fishing, farming and trade to one of the most treasured island destinations in East Africa.
